Leelond Harlee Hurlston August 26, 1953 - July 31, 2022

Leelond Harlee Hurlston was born in East End, Grand Cayman, on August 26th, 1953. He was the youngest son and
the second child of the late James Delesseps Bodden (of East End) and Ruby Carmen Hurlston (of Cayman Brac).
His siblings included 6 sisters: Judy Ann, Lily, Georgette, Joan, Verna, and Elaire; and 7 brothers: Hollis, Arvery,
Hinsley, Linston, John, William, and Quinston.
Harlee (also known as Brownie, Hully, Hullo, and Seppy) grew up in the idyllic district of East End, Grand Cayman.
He attended the East End All Age School (which later became the East End Primary School) until age eleven. In
1962, his family decided to move to the “big city” of George Town and temporarily settled on Goring Avenue. His
family home was later built directly opposite of the Church of God (Universal) (where Helix Healthcare is now
located) on Middle Road. After moving to George Town, he continued his education at the then Secondary Modern
School. Harlee enjoyed the remainder of his childhood growing up on Walkers Road. His favorite past times were
fishing, swimming, and diving at Hog Sty Bay.
Harlee’s immediate siblings remember him as being a good child. He was a loving, happy, bundle of joy, and a
favorite of the whole family. As a young man he enjoyed having fun. He took an interest in music and playing the
electric guitar. It could be said of him that, “He would dance all night until broad daylight.” Yet, despite the
foregoing, Harlee was a God-fearing man and enjoyed coming to Sunday morning service here at Church of God
Universal.
A traditional occupation for someone in Harlee’s age group was that of a Seaman. However, being the curious
individual that he was, Harlee chose a nontraditional career path. After leaving school, he began working at H.O.
Merren & Company. He also worked in Brother Fossie Arch’s Grocery Store. He later worked in construction and
tried his hand at various skills and trades in that industry – with carpentry being an area of interest. He soon learned
and perfected the art of tiling, and it eventually became his primary profession.
