I will always remember Herb fondly.. I did an internship at Sunset House in 2007. He was always kind and welcoming. We shared the bond of being New Yorkers which always gave us things to talk about. I am sure he will be sorely missed.

My deepest condolences to you, Lin, Maria, and everyone at CCPC. I am truly heartbroken and still in disbelief over this news. I’ll always remember Herbie—I used to joke around, and respond to him with “Yes Sir!” whenever I made him mad. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. ❤️🙏

I am very sorry to hear of Herb’s passing. He was more then just a good friend. I thought of him as my brother from another mother. I feel very honored to be a good friend and adopted brother.
You will be very much missed

From the first time I met Herb at Cathy Church’s Photo in 1997, we recognised each other as New Yorkers and we were friends from there on in. Always enjoyed talking with him and his passion for birds. I left island about six months ago, but did see Herb before I left without realising how sick he was. He will be missed, but our memories of him will live on in all he touched and in his children. He loved to brag about his son who was a boxing journalist. My heart goes out to his immediate family and all of his extended family at the photo centre.

From the moment I set foot in Cayman for the first time in my mid 20s to start my new job at Cathy Church’s Photo Centre and met Herb, a fellow New Yawker and Brooklynite, I felt immediately at home. Cathy and Herb became my island family in those early years– warmly inviting me over to their house for Thanksgiving dinner just a few days after I arrived (at which their African Grey Parrot, Sparky, sat on Herb’s shoulder and shared in the feast!), holding staff Christmas parties and giving us gifts, celebrating birthdays together.

Cathy is the reason I initially came to Cayman, but Herb is (indirectly) the reason I came back to stay and make a life here. Herb introduced me to a very special guy who would become my boyfriend and business partner of many years. That’s just the kind of person Herb was– caring, generous, a connection maker, a character, an inner softie with a Brooklyn tough guy exterior, and always ready to offer a good deal to his friends (even up until the last time I saw him just two weeks ago, he told me “go over to the photo shop, tell Lin I sent you, she’ll take care of you” ).

Herb, I’ll miss stopping by to say hi and catch up and hear your many amusing stories. Thank you for the ways you’ve impacted my life both directly and indirectly. Thank you for making me feel at home in an unfamiliar place with your New Yawk accent and attitude. You will be missed ❤️

Sending heartfelt condolences to Cathy, Herb’s family, Maria & Lin, Sparky, and all those who knew and loved him.
