    Remembering my best friend Gailya
When I arrived on Grand Cayman in January 1972, Gailya was one of the first Caymanians I met. She managed Comart, her parents store in George Town. Gailya had a wonderfully warm personality and we became close friends almost immediately. Our first advanture together was taking diving lessons at the British Sub Aqua Club.
On Saturday afternoons, when Gailya took a few hours off from the store, we dived off the iron shore behind her house on South Church Street next to Seaview to cool off. When we had fresh fish we grilled at her house. We also used to pick up breadfruit from uncle Malleys across the street and relaxed in the sunshine.
We flew a couple of times a year to Miami together to order goods for the store and shop for ourselves, have nice dinners, etc. A couple of times we travelled to the US to either visit Gailya’s cousins in Napa Valley and to San Francisco, Monterey on to Las Vegas and Houston and enjoyed the experiences. When Gailya asked me to be her matron of honor at her wedding to Ken, I was very pleased and Bud and I flew per sea plan to Bimini. It was a happy event with quite a few friends of theirs from Cayman being present.
Gailya was a wonderful daughter to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Coe. She paid a lot of attention to them. Every day on her way home, she stopped at her parents’ home to chat with them and to make sure all was well. On Sundays she would drive them on a tour around parts of the Island so they could see the changes on the island. I will never forget her mom saying to me “When God made Gailya, he made an Angel”. How true! That is the way I knew Gailya all of her life.
Gailya also was very close to her sister in Michigan. They spoke very frequent. She loved her family and I met them all since their children were quite young during visits to Cayman. Gailya said once to me “is it not amazing that we are the same age and our sisters are the same age too and our parents had only two children each and then laughed about it.
When I saw Gailya the last time last year her soul was the same, full of love. I miss you and will never forget you.
    Love, Marga
We would have come to say Good Bye; unfortunately Covid prevented us.

Gailya was my cousin and dear friend, we will miss her tremendously. She helped many people, especially those who had determination and work ethic and need a little push to pursue their dreams. She graciously welcomed us into her home many times and on short notice. We will miss the conversations sitting on the back porch looking out at the sea that she dearly loved.
We would love to be there to say farewell had it not been for the travel restrictions.

Gailya and my mother, Deanna Merren were often mistaken for each other, it was most likely that beautiful blonde hair they both had! Deanna and her were friends since childhood and I have many memories of Comart where they both worked and I still reminisce about days past being in the store reading comics at the magazine stand or eating Bulla and Cheese. Gailya never seemed to mind, I’m sure us kids were a little bit annoying, sometimes I guess, but she treated us as family and was always very kind. May you rest in eternal peace, Gailya.

I worked at Comart and so did my mom, Deanna Merren, whom many mistook for Gailya. My mom preceded her in death, but I can only imagine my mom’s sadness if she was alive to know Gailya passed away. They got along so well.
Like Marga Jones said, Gailya was very dedicated to her parents and they were blessed to have her always checking in on them.
Living in the US, I’m sorry I could not attend her funeral.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
